260608 PMP content outlinePMI will comprehensively update the world’s leading project management certification, the PMP® (Project Management Professional), effective July 2026. The changes reflect evolving expectations of project managers, including the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence, sustainability, hybrid ways of working, and increasing project complexity.

The PMP examination will continue to be structured around three major domains:
  • People (33%) – Leadership, collaboration, stakeholder management
  • Process (41%) – Planning, delivery, quality, finance, procurement
  • Business Environment (26%) – Governance, compliance, risk management, organizational change
A key enhancement is the stronger integration of:
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Sustainability
  • Value Delivery and Business Value
  • Governance and Compliance
  • Hybrid and Agile approaches

As a result, the exam will more closely reflect the realities of modern project work. Approximately 40% of exam questions will focus on traditional/predictive approaches, while around 60% will address agile, adaptive, or hybrid methodologies.

New Question Types in the Exam

The PMP examination will become more practical and interactive. New formats include:

  • Case- and scenario-based questions
  • Graphic-based questions
  • Interactive formats such as point-and-click, matching, and drag-and-drop exercises

Changes to Eligibility Requirements

PMI will introduce a more differentiated approach based on educational background and project management experience. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications, the required project leadership experience will range from:

  • 60 months of project leadership experience for candidates with a secondary school diploma to
  • 24 months of experience for candidates holding a degree from a PMI GAC-accredited academic program

The following requirement remains unchanged:

  • 35 hours of project management education/training, unless the candidate holds an active CAPM® certification.
Our Conclusion

With the new PMP® eligibility requirements and exam content, PMI is responding to the growing importance of leadership, value delivery, agility, AI, and sustainability in projects. The certification is evolving from a predominantly methodology-focused examination into a comprehensive validation of modern project management competence.
