Title
What Risk Registers Miss: Lessons from Expedition Leadership for Project Managers
Abstract
Risk registers are essential, but they do not capture everything that shapes project outcomes. Some of the most important signals appear in changing conditions, fragile assumptions, shifting team dynamics, and moments when the plan still looks fine on paper but reality has already moved.
In this session, Laura Samsó Pericón explores what project managers can learn from expedition leadership, where progress depends not only on preparation and risk assessment, but also on judgment, trust, adaptability, and the ability to read the terrain as it changes. Drawing on experience from demanding expedition environments and complex organisational settings, she connects these lessons to the realities of project leadership in uncertainty.
The session offers practical reflections for project professionals who want to strengthen decision-making, team trust, and leadership when formal tools are necessary, but no longer sufficient.
Laura Samsó Pericón works at Airbus Defence & Space. She is the founder of Synarea Insights and there she focuses on strategy, leadership, and emerging technologies, with expertise in AI, cyber resilience, autonomy, and complex systems.
She also brings insights from expedition leadership, applying decision-making, risk management, and adaptability in uncertain environments. Laura is an international speaker, TEDx presenter, and active leader in PMI and UIAA.
