251210 IT Strategie Logo HiResAdvancing digitalization, the increased use of AI and modern cloud architectures are leading to an increasing need for strategic orientation in IT project management. Many project managers today are active in initiatives and programs in which information technology, organizational and strategic issues are closely linked.

Companies increasingly expect methods that ensure the connection between business strategy and IT project planning. At the same time, there is little content on IT strategy within the PM community, although this topic has a significant influence on the alignment of IT projects with corporate goals.

The CoP IT strategy is created against this background. In the PMI Germany Chapter, the CoPs support the exchange of knowledge and the further development of best practices in project management. Through the exchange of experiences among dedicated PM experts, new methods and concepts are developed and passed on for practice.

Motivation

In many companies, there is no coordinated approach between IT strategy, project management and IT architecture. The established frameworks PMBOK® and TOGAF each address isolated subject areas, but they do not provide guidance for collaboration across their practice. The overarching IT management frameworks COBIT and ITIL also do not offer any concrete help for overarching coordination. In practice, a process vacuum exists exactly where value creation begins.

The CoP IT Strategy addresses this gap by developing procedures and methods that bring together the relevant management practices for the successful planning and implementation of IT strategies.

The mission of the CoP is to develop and communicate generic and cross-industry methods for planning and implementing IT/digitization strategies.

Goals of the CoP IT Strategy

The overall goal of the CoP IT strategy is to create a structured platform for the exchange of best practices between different IT management disciplines. The CoP is intended to develop practical methods that strategically align IT projects and maximize the profit from IT investments.

Examples of methods that the CoP IT strategy can further develop:

  • Structured strategic analyses with a focus on IT and business
  • Definition of medium/long-term IT goals and associated guardrails
  • Evaluation and filtering of IT project ideas
  • Systematic selection and prioritization of IT projects
  • Ensuring business-IT alignment
  • Cooperative strategic planning of portfolio management and enterprise architecture
  • Creation and maintenance of integrated strategic roadmaps

Advantages for participants

  • Exchange and networking with experienced experts
  • Personal development: Strengthening of one's own competence in IT strategy topics.
  • Co-creation of best practices and access to tools

A commitment to active participation and to take on tasks is expected.

With the exception of individuals whose professional contributions are of particular interest, the CoP IT Strategy is only available to Chapter members.

We invite interested parties to an online appointment on January 21, 2026 from 7:30 – 8:00 p.m., where we will present the goals, working methods and planned activities of the new CoP IT strategy.
