Regulation, security of supply, political frameworks, and high investment volumes: The Community of Practice (CoP) Energy of PMI Germany Chapter discussed which challenges set projects in the energy sector apart from other industries.
The Community of Practice Energy of PMI Germany Chapter has started its work with a clear question: What makes energy project management unique?

During the group’s second regular session, the eight participating members discussed the conditions and challenges shaping projects in the energy sector. It quickly became clear that energy projects operate in an environment heavily influenced by regulatory requirements, political decisions, and demanding technical standards.
The discussion focused on topics including:

• Security of supply and critical infrastructure
• The impact of the energy transition on projects and organizations
• Lengthy approval and permitting processes
• High investment volumes and long project cycles
• Collaboration with market participants such as grid operators and energy suppliers
• Data protection and security requirements
• Digital transformation and data quality
• Stakeholder management in politically influenced environments

The exchange highlighted how closely technical, economic, and societal factors are interconnected in energy project management. It also showed that many challenges cannot be viewed in isolation, as they directly affect project governance, communication, and decision-making.
In the upcoming sessions, the CoP will further explore selected topics and develop practical approaches for everyday project work.
